The last meal I had before taking my driving test :< RESTORE WAFFLES ARE A RIP OFF #justsaying
So if you follow me on Instagram (or if you follow my mum on Instagram lol), you'd know that I just got my license!! I passed on my first attempt, it's so unbelievable even I can't believe myself.
Here's exactly what happened during my TP... I was scheduled to practice driving before my actual test and I thought that my instructor booked the circuit for practice but HE DIDN'T and I was so unprepared when I found out because I literally only went to the circuit TWICE!! I didn't even master my ram well enough so I really thought I was going to fail. So for 1.5 hours before my test, I only practiced my U-turns and changing of lanes etc etc (things I'm more confident of) and spent the entire time being worried abt my circuit test.
Well, whatever it is, I had to go for my test and when the tester called out my name in his ultra deep and scary voice... "VEVIEN ONG LI YING" my first thoughts were like ok good game, he sounds so scary but after the briefing he asked me if I was nervous and I was like uh ya obviously!??!
The main mistakes I made were damm retarded:
1) He said drive into no. 28, I went left which was beside 28 -_- he was like "girl, this isn't no. 28" SO EMBARRASSING?
2) My instructor told me that whenever I complete a test (for e.g. parallel parking), change my gear to N, lift my hand brake and tell the tester "sir, I have complete my test" so for my directional change, I reversed and semi-completed the test and told the tester that I completed it.. oh my gosh (my instructor taught me wrongly, he didn't say that I have to move off then the test is considered complete.. that idiot).
3) The tester told me that for vertical parking, there is a time limit of 3 minutes. If I don't complete the test in 3 minutes, IMMEDIATE FAILURE. I WAS SO NERVOUS I ALMOST HIT THE KERB AND DECIDED TO RE-DO THE WHOLE TEST AGAIN, thank God it was within three minutes.. phew!
Best part about all my mistakes? He didn't penalised me at all. I was really shock and thankful for favour. Throughout the test he was super nice, asking me if I was nervous and kept saying "relax, just take it as we're going for a car ride!" ON TOP OF THAT, he didn't test me the ram, three point turn and U-turn at all!! My first thoughts were "fail alr, that's why he don't even bother to test" but I was wrong!
As I waited for him in the office, he came in with the slip of paper and asked me if I was still nervous. I said yes and nervously asked him "did I do okay?" (you know how they say you can't ask your testers any questions at all) and then he slightly lifted the paper and I saw the huge word PASSED and I was going to cry!!!! He replied me with a "no.. you didn't do okay.." I just started laughing like crazy and he signed off with a huge signature and asked me to go down and watch the graduation video (super gruesome and lame) then go collect license! HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE LAR.
my mother was so proud of me she instagram-ed and tagged my entire family, rofl I cannot.
So I guess from this experience I've learnt a few things and it's better that I share it just in case you might end up like me..
Firstly, don't learn from a private instructor UNLESS you personally know someone who is really good or is directly referred to you by a friend. My instructor (David Tay Tuition Driving) is good to a certain extent but I wouldn't recommend him. Like I mentioned, I only practiced in the circuit twice and it's super different from practicing in the multi story car park. Furthermore, his rates are more expensive - $36/hour and when I started learning parking, he charges an extra $18 because I apparently need to pay the union for learning at the carpark (can anybody justify? is it true?) so it's $54/hour. This wasn't stated in the contract he asked me to sign. During lesson time, he will be on his phone, watching his karaoke videos, showing me his pictures of him and Goh Chok Tong and taking 10 minutes toilet break almost every lesson without pro rating my fees or making it up to me.
OH AND HE IS A REAL ASS, he made me pay a deposit of $54 which he say he will return at the end of my test and after I told him I passed, I asked for my deposit and he said "ai ya the $54 just let uncle keep and drink coffee lar hor, uncle really help you a lot". SIAO?? YOUR COFFEE BUY FROM WHERE?? And that is so not true, he did not help me that much. He didn't even tell me basic things like checking of blind spots, signalling when moving off a lot etc etc etc
ok I'll nvr be done ranting about my instructor but just take note that doesn't mean if your instructor has xx years of experience and xx passing rate means he's good. You need someone to be able to point out your mistakes and tell you every single thing you need to know.
Secondly, be confident. One thing for sure is that during the test, your mind will constantly question how you just did for the last obstacle. This will cause you to be unable to focus and will only cause you to lose focus. Just be confident, control your thoughts and focus on the present.
Thirdly, things to note: always signal when turning, ALWAYS check blind spot (this is a killer and one of the priorities for testers) and always check for safety - worth 4 points btw.
Lastly, I guess all you can do is pray and hope for a good tester. I think this plays a huge part in being able to pass. Be super polite, when he gives direction just say "yes sir", if you make a mistake just apologise and for the entire 40 minutes, simply cast your pride aside and be humble.
I HOPE THIS HELPS HEHE
Took the car out for a ride immediately after getting my license. Bernard and I drove up to Dempsey Hill for some truffle fries at PS Cafe while getting some work done. Went shopping in town for a while before meeting our friends for dinner at Grub! Drove over to Holland Village for some ice cream to end off the night! Loveliest bunch of friends : )
and then the next day Bernard flew off to Oman, boooo suddenly my happiness decreased by a thousand times. SOBS. GEOGRAPHICAL SEPARATION ALWAYS SUCKS! Not to mention the stupid time differences and the lack of wifi, oh goodness. Thank you Kyle and Tiffy for accompanying me to send Bernard off hehe x
Met the family for dinner and had my super favourite peanut ice cream (the store in front of takashimaya!!)
