Day 9 of 21 - Amsterdam

Started our next day in Amsterdam pretty early! Look how cool this is - the road had to be lifted for boats to pass through!

First stop of the day: Albert Cuyp Market

We took a nice stroll and the street stalls had everything we wanted - fruit juice, cheese, stroopwaffles, local delights like the herring fish and apparels. I even bought a pair of Nike here! Bernard was going absolutely nuts about the endless choices of food but guess who had the worst stomach ache of his life that night??? HAHAHA funniest experience in the world, i'm guessing it's the herring fish :>

Next stop: House of Bols!

We couldn't cover all the museums in the Museumplein area so instead of visiting the cliche Van Gogh or Rijksmuseum, we decided to visit the House of Bols which is a cocktail museum. I figured Bernard will like it since he's been bar-tending over the past 5 months.

This museum is self-guided and it was really interesting. A good blend of education, history and entertainment. Bols created Genever which is the grandfather of Gin so you can imagine just how much history is there that goes behind this brand!

Our entry fee included a cocktail and two shots of our choice. It was really worth it!! My choice of drink was the Vanilla Berry Crush!

THE ALCOHOL WAS SO STRONG. Halfway through the drink I was like.. there's still two shots each for the both of us, I don't think we can make it through the rest of the day if we drink up everything LOL! We took the shots and left tipsy.

Tipsy enough to take weird, stupid photos like these. Look how red Bernard's face is.

Ice cream pit stop ^_^ (we did this too often in Europe!!) And then we spent the next half of the day just walking aimlessly while exploring Jordaan! The Jordaan area is a heavy residential area and it was like a maze of restaurants, cafes and stores. It's so peaceful and seemed less touristy!

Pictures alone can't describe the beauty of this city and it definitely deserves more than just two days in coffee shops, not that we stepped into one. Brick buildings, open skyline and windy canal streets.. Everybody there is eclectic (just like Amsterdam haha) - art enthusiast, historians, architects. Basically whatever you're looking for, whether it's a green space, museums, a crazy nightlife, hipsters and shopping?? It can all be found in Amsterdam! It's honestly one of favourite places in Europe now apart from Paris :-)

kk I sound like i'm part of their tourism board or smth, moving on..... DINNER!

Have you ever craved two things at the same time?? I was having mad cravings for pasta (obviously to make up for the worst meal I had the day before) and burger so we bought both. Tuna pasta from a homely italian take-away and truffle egg burger from the popular Burger Meester. Both were so good, could't decide which was better. Ok probably the crazy burger #causetruffle.

every cafe in the UK and Europe looks like this, i'm jealous.

Last stop: Anne Frank House

I thought arriving at 7 pm would mean lesser people in the queue but LOOK JUST HOW LONG THE QUEUE IS OMG T_T and then worst of all, it started to pour. Thankfully we had our umbrellas and I thought maybe some ppl would start leaving and the queue will get short but NO! Well well, it was worth the wait nonetheless! This museum was really touching, I was so engrossed I didn't even take pictures. Probably one of the highlights of Amsterdam : )

Next post - Prague!

Day 8 of 21 - Amsterdam

Cobblestone streets above wide canals, "coffee" shops, fantastic museums, the land of tulips and I don't have to add the red light district for you to know that i'm talking about beautiful Amsterdam.

Enroute to Amsterdam after spending 7 amazing days in London!

Took a train to our hotel upon arrival ~ Forgot to take pictures of the hotel so here's some I stole from Google, hehe:

Hotel Arena Amsterdam
's-Gravesandestraat 51, AA Amsterdam, Netherlands

We used Airbnb for most of the countries we visited with Amsterdam being the only hotel exception because it cost almost the same price as an Airbnb room!! It was definitely more worth it to stay at this hotel. I have to say, we could not have been more impressed with Hotel Arena. It was clean, stylish and conveniently located - 100% recommend! Had the best sleep ever!

We had two hours to kill before check-in so we went to a nearby recommended tapas restaurant called Para Negra for lunch while waiting! Typical spanish dishes, pretty tasty but I remember it being quite expensive.

Still had some time to kill so we popped by a nice cafe : )

canal next to our hotel!

Our first stop was of course the Museumplein. It's where all the famous attractions like Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark is located at. Of course the famous "I Amsterdam" monument to take the obligatory tourist shot is also located here.

Expectations:

Reality:

GOSH??? SO CRAZY CROWDED! We couldn't even take the whole monument from afar because they cordoned off the area for some event -_-

The event as seen above includes a marching band...

so we walked around and explored the whole afternoon!

Amsterdam is a perfect city. I didn't even want to take the bus even though we bought a unlimited travel pass. I stuck to walking and I sure wasn't disappointed. The gentle canals are the perfect backdrop!!

And then after walking non-stop, I was super hungry!! Walked pass this tourist trap that sold pasta and pizza for 5 euros and I got lured in. BY FAR, THE WORST MEAL I HAD ON THE TRIP. You know how super sad is it to waste stomach space and calories on yucky food especially when overseas??? I felt terrible for Bernard cause I made the bad decision to choose this place cause 5 euros sounded too good to be true and it wasn't like we're on a budget or smth!?!? sorry, just ranting.

Bought some nutella ice-cream to make ourselves feel better....

Guess where we ended the night at? Yes, the famous Red Light District. Although controversial, this is only so we can say we've actually been to Amsterdam. I must say, it was the most bizarre experience OF MY LIFE. A walk through these lanes is a whole different experience, especially when we come from a conservative country like Singapore.

An eye-opening day to sum up day 1 :-)
